Denmark 2-3 Portugal
A late goal from substitute Silvestre Varela helped Portugal hold off a brave Denmark in Lviv. The Portuguese had gone 2-0 up before a brace from Nicklas Bendtner brought the sides level again, however Varela's heroics off the bench moved Portugal one step closer to qualification from the 'Group of Death'.
Portugal were ahead after 24 minutes when centre back Pepe glanced home a header at the near post. It followed a bright start from his side, and the goal was deserved.
Just 12 minutes later and a sweet finish by Helder Postiga doubled their advantage. Nani worked space down the right hand side, and put in a nice ball which Postiga swept home beautifully with a flick of his right boot.
Denmark looked demoralised, but responded brilliantly. Late in the first half, Lars Jacobsen's cross was headed back across the face of goal by Match Day 1 hero Michael Krohn-Dehli. Bendtner met the ball at the back post to nod into an empty net and give the Danes a lifeline at the break.
Portugal looked unable to cope with Denmark's constant pressure in the second half, however should have stretched their lead on several occasions through their captain, Cristiano Ronaldo. The skipper had another off night for his side, failing to take many wonderful opportunities as the pressure of the nation weighed on his shoulder's.
It proved costly as, with ten minutes remaining, Bendtner equalised. Jacobsen was again the architect, whipping in a deep cross from the right hand side which the Danish striker met firmly. Portugal's keeper, Rui Patricio, got a hand to his shot, touching it against the post, however was unlucky as he saw it rebound in.
But there was to be even more late drama. Just 3 minutes after his introduction from the bench, Varela struck a winner for the Portuguese. Despite making a hash of his first time effort, he followed up by smashing his left footed shot past the keeper and in to seal a 3-2 win.
The result meant Portugal moved a step closer to the Quarter Final's, however with their final game coming against the Netherlands, anything can happen.
Holland 1-2 Germany
Germany all but sealed their passage through to the Quarter Final's with a comfortable 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Kharkiv. A first half double from Mario Gomez helped Germany gain control over the match, before a second half strike from Robin Van Persie brought the Dutch right back into it, but it wasn't to be, as the Germans ran out convincing winner's.
Following up from their thoroughly disappointing 1-0 loss to Denmark on Match Day 1, the Dutch had it all to play for, however they looked like a side that lacked motivation and the will to win as Germany got on top early.
Their dominance was rewarded in the 24th minute when Gomez finished off a wonderful team goal. He was spotted by Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played a lovely through ball to his Bayern Munich team mate. Gomez took a sublime touch to control the ball, picking it up with one fluent, turning motion, before slotting it past the keeper.
He was at it again 14 minutes later with another brilliant goal. Just like the first goal, Schweinsteiger played Gomez in behind the Dutch defence. However this time he was on a much harder angle, yet still managed to place it into the far corner with clinical precision for a 2-0 lead.
Holland made two changes at the break, with Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Rafael Van Der Vaart coming off the bench in the hope that it would give the Netherlands some attacking flair.
However it was Van Persie who pulled one back on 73 minutes. He drove through the heart of the German defence before arrowing a right footed shot into the bottom corner to give his nation a chance.
It had taken the Dutch over three quarters of the game, however they began to play some decent attacking football. But it proved to be too little, too late as the Germans held on comfortably to record a 2-1 win.
It saw them place on foot in the Quarter Final's, with a draw against Denmark enough to see them qualify on top of the group. Meanwhile for Holland, they now have to record a big win against Portugal and hope that Germany defeat the Danes for a chance to qualify.
Germany 6 (+2)
Portugal 3 (0)
Denmark 3 (0)
Holland 0 (-2)
