Day 4

France 1-1 England

France and England have gotten their Euro 2012 campaigns off to a sobering start with a 1-1 draw in Donetsk. In a dour affair, Joleon Lescott headed England into the lead before Samir Nasri leveled for the French just nine minutes later.

Both sides took their time in feeling each other out in a cagey opening. The best chance came when James Milner went through on goal and rounded the keeper, only to skew his shot wide of a gaping open goal.

Milner wasn't made to rue the missed chance, though, with Lescott putting England ahead on the half hour mark. He got free following a wonderful Steven Gerrard delivery, and headed home from close range to open the scoring.

However France pulled it back nine minutes later when Nasri beat Joe Hart at his near post with a powerful left footed strike from the edge of the area.

Neither side even looked like breaching their opposition's defence in the second half, as the game petered out into a 1-1 draw. With France dominating possession, England would perhaps be the happier of the two sides with the point, however work remains for both sides if they're to reach the latter stages of this competition.

Ukraine 2-1 Sweden

Host nation Ukraine got their campaign off to the best possible start with a come-from-behind victory over Sweden in their opening game. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given Sweden the lead early in the second half, before a sublime Andriy Shevchenko double in the space of 7 minutes gave Ukraine the vital three points.

In front of 68,000 vocal fans at a packed Olympic Stadium in Kiev, the two sides played out an evenly matched first half. Chances were coming thick and fast for both sides, however neither could break the deadlock as they went into the break scoreless.

It took just seven minutes for that to be changed in the second half. Kim Kallstrom delivered a nice cross for Ibrahimovic to head home from close range to stun the home fans.

But if that stunned them, what Shevchenko produced three minutes later gave them a moment they'll never forget. Andriy Yarmolenko put a lovely ball into the area, and the 35-year-old Shevchenko flew through the air to power a header home. It was a magnificent goal and made it all square.

In an incredible seven minute burst, Shevchenko put Ukraine in front. This time he glanced home a header into the near post from a corner to send the Olympic Stadium into uproar. There was pandemonium in the stands as Shevchenko and Ukraine celebrated.

Sweden pressed hard for an equaliser late in the game, yet the home side held on to record a famous victory.

Ukraine 3 (+1)

England 1 (0)

France 1 (0)

Sweden 0 (-3)
